About My Trip

I am walking around the coast of Great Britain, starting at Tower Bridge in London (that well know coastal resort) on Monday 6th April 2015 and walking anti-clockwise. This isn’t a world first as other people have done it before, although with so many islands, estuaries and no defined coastal path the whole way round, it’s difficult to be precise about anything. I have reckoned on taking one year and covering approximately 6000 miles.

Why? Because I like this country, I like the coast, I’ve got the time and this is something I’ve wanted to do for a while (although I can’t remember when I first had the idea). I’ve finished work and I’m taking a gap year…if all these 18 year olds can have one why can’t I?

This is not a challenge, although I can actually hear everyone that knows me well laughing at this point. What I mean is that I have not set myself a challenge with any rules as this is meant to be a fun and once-in-a-lifetime experience and I want to be able to stop, come home or walk less on any given day because I fancy a dip in the sea.

This blog is intended as my personal diary of my experience.

    Hi Lucy,
What an adventure you’re having! Hope you got my first message. Hope the feet are bearing up.
It would seem you must be an expert on seals by now! I remembered seeing them on the beach in Norfolk a few years ago round Christmas time. There were loads of pups….very cute!
I think you’re going to enjoy that Northumberland coastline near Bambrugh castle looking out towards Lindisfarne. Played some lovely golf there a few years ago.
Build in some time to enjoy it all. After all you are retired now!! Keep up the great reports. Gerry Mutlow is reading them too, totally agog! More power to your feet!! Love Liz

Hi Liz, for some reason I didn’t get your first message but I’m pleased you’re following me, and Gerry Mutlow too. No doubt she’s horrified at some of the food I’m writing about. I am really looking forward to Northumberland, I only hope it can live up to my expectations.

I have a feeling a drove past you a few times the other day if you were anywhere near Rosehearty/Sandhaven just along from Fraserburgh. Bizarre as I noticed your photo on the Todhead Lighthouse page. What your doing looks immense. I am in love with the Coast it’s shape, it’s history, it’s new stories. Brilliant. Will keep reding and see where you get to next.

Lucy – heard your name on R4 yesterday on the trailer for next week’s Claire Balding’s prog. Assume you must be the Lucy N who was on ACSC around 2010 when I was a DS. If so – just wanted to say Hi – and that I am hugely envious of your year’s walk ! What a great idea – am working my way v slowly around the SW coast path as time (not much of it !) allows and a grander walk around the National Trail path is something I would love to do at some stage. Good luck with the walk and I’ll listen out for the R4 prog next week ! Nigel Morton

Hello Nigel. Yes I am the same Lucy that was in your term 3 syndicate doing the estimate! Actually, I can say that I learnt something because throughout this walk I have very clearly maintained my, carefully selected, aim; hence not walked it all! So far it’s been a fantastic trip – a gap year (becoming 18 months) before I consider “what next?”. The SW Coast path is fantastic as I’m sure you’ll agree. I’m not sure about the radio interview – media wasn’t my strong point. Regards, lucy

Lucy – thanks for the reply – and good to hear from you. Enjoy the rest of the walk and I hope to follow in at least some of your footsteps over the coming years ! Am sure the radio prog will be great – look forward to listening to it !! Best wishes. Nigel M

Hi Lucy, have just been listening to Ramblings on radio 4. I have been thinking about walking around Britain myself , when I retire. Like your self, for no other reason than to explore this beautiful country of ours. When the time comes, I would be grateful for any tips you may have, as i have never done anything like this before. I do enjoy walking, and like your self, quite happy with my own company.
    Happy walking!

Hi John. What a blast from the past. How could I forget being beasted in the gym and learning to box? Are you still training hard? Lucy

I love the gym but unlike my Army days I am now paying for the privilege. Remember Pilates classes with Brigadier Shaw? What fun.

I bet you have walked around the British coastline with a big smile on your face. What you are doing is beautiful, enjoy the rest of your route march🏃🏼
